Biography
My current artistic practice explores the symbiotic relationship between the ever-expanding technological systems that we rely on and the intricate biological systems that we inhabit. I am intrigued by the enigma of self-identity and the nuances that define our existence, which I seek to unravel through the personification of non-organic systems. These created “entities” are a reflection of my contemplation on the ephemeral nature of existence and the inevitability of death. There is a poignant sadness that often permeates through these simulacrums as they are often built to decay.
In my work, there is often a subtle interplay of motion and stillness, where a small window of movement or action is nestled within the larger whole, offering a striking contrast to the chaotic form. When left alone, a meditative calmness is evoked by the rhythmic sounds and movement produced. Yet, when activated, my pieces can produce an aggressive or chaotic motion contrasting this droning predictability. The addition of “sensory organs” allow these systems to dynamically respond to external stimuli. These creations are often dependent on the viewer, who inadvertently becomes part of these systems.
I investigate the complexities of identity and personhood in an increasingly complex world of interdependent systems. What does it mean to be an individual while being a part of this intricate machine? Through the creation of electronic systems, leaving room for chance, and inviting viewer participation, my work seeks to unravel these existential questions and provoke thought on the nature of the self.
